The company’s mission centers on commercializing atom-based quantum products that improve performance across a range of computing applications. The Oxford (Kidlington) office serves as the base for this full-time position, with the option to work from home up to two days per week, depending on business needs and manager approval.
Role overview
This Senior Optical Engineer role focuses on optical design, analysis, and integration for advanced quantum technologies. The position involves solving diverse optical engineering challenges and working closely with a multidisciplinary team to turn experimental concepts into engineered systems. The environment values proactive, hands-on work and close collaboration.
What you will do
- Work with physicists and engineering teams (opto-mechanical, mechanical, electrical, and software) to develop optical systems for quantum sensing and computing.
- Lead the full lifecycle of optical systems, from requirements and design to assembly and testing. This includes laser distribution, modulation, delivery, and imaging.
- Manage both component-level and large sub-system optical assemblies, involving precise alignment of many optical elements.
- Use computational methods to optimize, analyze, and set tolerances for optical designs.
- Apply simulation tools to guide design choices and communicate results to project leaders, both verbally and through detailed documentation.
- Oversee optical system design reviews.
- Validate and characterize optical components and systems for performance, reliability, and stability using structured test plans.
Location
