sdms is hiring a Manufacturing Engineer - Tooling Specialist at our Tonawanda, New York facility. This role focuses on tooling solutions within manufacturing, supporting safe and efficient production. The position works closely with plant operations and cross-functional teams to address tooling challenges, drive cost efficiencies, and maintain high standards of quality and safety.
What You Will Do
- Act as the main contact for tooling-related issues in the manufacturing process.
- Work with plant operations to address safety, quality, throughput, and cost concerns related to tooling.
- Develop and implement strategies to reduce tooling and manufacturing costs.
- Monitor weekly tooling expenditures to ensure alignment with variable piece cost budgets.
- Conduct tooling trials and document results according to customer-specific testing requirements.
- Update and maintain tool drawings and related documentation as needed.
- Establish systems for reconditioning and reusing tooling where cost effective.
- Participate in scheduled operational and team problem-solving meetings.
- Support teams in resolving machining and tooling issues affecting costs, scrap, or production rates.
- Contribute to cross-functional efforts to meet plant performance metrics.
- Recommend machining processes and cutting parameters to improve efficiency.
- Introduce new technologies and improved tooling designs.
- Develop plans for year-over-year cost per piece reductions.
- Coordinate with the preset team on effective tool setup methods.
- Use PFEP and Top Spend Data to launch cost-saving projects.
- Complete documentation for cost savings and tooling tests.
- Report non-conformances, corrective action requests (CARs), and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain safety and housekeeping standards in the facility.
- Make decisions within established guidelines and procedures.
- Report near misses and incidents to the site manager and assist with investigations as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Experience in manufacturing and design.
- Strong problem-solving and mathematical skills.
