The Grid Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting the Senior Grid Manager in driving the comprehensive grid connection process for the UK Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio, while also providing assistance to global offshore wind projects as needed. This position primarily involves overseeing grid connection applications, managing Grid Connection Offers, coordinating technical assessments, and ensuring adherence to G99 and Grid Code standards.
The Grid Manager will collaborate closely with internal departments, including development, construction, and procurement, as well as external partners such as Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Transmission Owners (TOs), National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO), Ofgem, and technical consultants. This role offers valuable experience in grid connection contracts, power system studies, and regulatory interactions, contributing to the effective execution of strategic energy infrastructure initiatives.
BESS Grid Connection Oversight:
Development Responsibilities:
- Provide expertise in grid connections during the early development phase of BESS projects, analyzing connection options, costs, and timeline impacts while advising on technical and commercial implications.
- Review connection offers, identify necessary reinforcement schemes, and specify project-specific requirements.
- Evaluate curtailment studies and offer insights into grid and power systems to assist in the development of commercial business cases.
- Facilitate clear communication among stakeholders to ensure understanding of grid-related risks and opportunities.
Construction Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with the construction team on electrical system design and grid integration for projects.
- Ensure that power system designs meet grid requirements and connection agreements, clarifying these requirements for contractors and internal teams.
- Review grid compliance study reports and results from grid compliance tests.
- Act as the primary point of contact for interfacing with the grid.
- Manage power system data and modeling for BESS assets, overseeing contractors and consultants to ensure timely and high-quality report delivery.
- Engage with DNO/TO/NESO regarding the grid compliance process.
Industry Engagement:
- Participate in grid-related industry forums, working groups, and consultations to contribute innovative ideas, stay updated on best practices, and represent the organization's interests in the changing energy landscape.
Strategic Grid Planning & Policy Monitoring:
- Assist in tracking and interpreting key policy and regulatory changes, such as Grid Connection Reform and the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA), to identify potential impacts and opportunities.
