Within this group, the People Systems team builds and maintains the technical backbone for HR, recruiting, payroll, benefits, and performance operations. Role Overview: Workday Engineer
OpenAI is hiring a Workday Engineer in San Francisco to design, build, and manage systems that power core people workflows. This role calls for deep Workday knowledge and strong engineering ability. The position involves building reliable integrations, improving system architecture, automating complex processes, and connecting Workday with both internal tools and external platforms, including those using new AI technologies.
Success in this role means going beyond basic configuration. The right person can analyze tough system problems, write and debug code, and work comfortably with Git and modern development workflows, including command-line tools. Collaboration spans People, Finance, Security, Engineering, and the People Innovations team. Projects range from improving existing infrastructure to launching new workflows and features from scratch.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain Workday integrations, applications, and automated workflows in areas like payroll, benefits, recruiting, performance, and case management.
- Improve the reliability, quality, and scalability of People systems using solid engineering, testing, and operational practices.
- Develop technical solutions that connect Workday with internal platforms, external vendors, and AI-powered tools.
- Help create more autonomous internal workflows by combining HR data, automation, orchestration, and smart tooling.
- Apply Git-based development, code review, and structured change management to deliver safely in a demanding environment.
- Use CLI tools and developer workflows to build, test, troubleshoot, and deploy solutions.
