sdms is looking for a Tooling Engineer Intern to join the team at its Tonawanda, New York facility. This internship offers practical experience in manufacturing, with a focus on tooling solutions that support production efficiency and safety. The intern will work alongside plant operations, contribute to cost-saving projects, and help address technical challenges on the shop floor.
What you will do
- Serve as the main contact for resolving tooling-related manufacturing issues.
- Collaborate with plant operations to address safety, quality, throughput, and cost concerns tied to tooling.
- Develop and implement cost-saving initiatives to optimize tooling and manufacturing expenses.
- Track weekly tooling expenses and compare them to budgeted piece costs.
- Conduct tooling trials, document outcomes, and ensure compliance with customer testing requirements.
- Update and maintain tooling drawings and related documentation.
- Design new systems for tooling reconditioning and reuse when feasible and cost-effective.
- Join regular team and operations meetings to support problem-solving.
- Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues that affect costs, scrap rates, and production efficiency.
- Support cross-functional teams in achieving operational targets.
- Recommend improvements to machining processes and cutting parameters.
- Introduce new technology and improved tooling designs.
- Develop strategies to achieve year-over-year reductions in cost per piece.
- Coordinate with the preset team to ensure effective tooling setup.
- Use PFEP and Top Spend Data to drive savings projects.
- Complete documentation for cost savings and tooling tests.
- Document and report non-conformances, corrective actions, and ongoing improvement efforts.
- Maintain safety and housekeeping standards throughout the site.
- Make decisions within established guidelines and procedures.
- Report near misses and incidents to management and assist with investigations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Previous experience in a manufacturing and design environment.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
