Qualifications

Qualifications:Proven experience in backend system architecture, preferably in mission-critical applications. Strong analytical skills with a focus on data fusion and uncertainty modeling. Experience with software engineering best practices and design principles. Proficient in leading and mentoring engineering teams. Excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

About the job

Air Space Intelligence develops technology for sectors where reliability and precision matter most, including aviation, defense, and energy. The company’s mission is to help teams move quickly from analysis to action, using tools that support critical operational decisions. Investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, and Renegade Partners.

The Civil Aviation team focuses on modernizing the U. S. air traffic control system. Each day, they tackle the challenge of coordinating tens of thousands of flights in a safety-critical environment. Their work centers on advanced trajectory prediction and decision-support systems, preparing the national airspace for new technologies like commercial space operations and advanced air mobility. Precision, resilience, and reliability are essential to improving safety and efficiency across the airspace.

Role overview

The Technical Lead, Backend for Civil Aviation, will design and guide the architecture of a backend system that supports U. S. air travel for the long term. This platform is foundational, not a prototype, and must be built for maintainability and future growth.

Key technical challenge

This role centers on operational-scale data fusion. The system must integrate diverse, noisy, and sometimes conflicting data sources, such as radar, flight plans, weather feeds, and operator inputs, to create a unified and authoritative view of the airspace. Projecting this state forward supports optimization across many competing factors. Success requires a strong grasp of uncertainty modeling, data provenance, and confidence, plus experience building systems that handle incomplete or erroneous data with care.

What you will do

  • Define and maintain design principles to manage system complexity, including clear module boundaries and abstractions that hide implementation details.
  • Make architectural decisions and communicate the reasoning to keep the team aligned.
  • Lead a small engineering team with a hands-on approach, guiding work from design through delivery.
  • Collaborate with product managers, platform engineers, and domain experts to drive success.
