About the job
About the Team
At OpenAI, our Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization exists at the crucial intersection of product design, engineering, research, and market strategy. We are dedicated to transforming cutting-edge platform capabilities into practical applications by collaborating with design partners, converting raw customer feedback into tangible software, repeatable processes, and robust products.
The FDE Platform team acts as a vital leverage function that amplifies the impact of the FDE organization on OpenAI’s products and platform. By integrating with customer-focused FDE pods, we provide hands-on support in areas such as architecture, product development, refactoring, and construction. This position is ideal for collaborative software engineers who are passionate about innovating with fellow creators on state-of-the-art products.
About the Role
As a pioneering Technical Deployment Lead (TDL) for the FDE Platform team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of our earliest deployments with design partners, guiding them from initial planning and defining success metrics through to production and measurable value realization.
This role is both operationally intensive and technically demanding: you will foster alignment among OpenAI and customer stakeholders, oversee the delivery plan across interconnected workstreams, and proactively address enterprise constraints to avoid late-stage discoveries. You will collaborate closely with both B2B and FDE Platform teams to ensure precise execution, transparent tradeoffs, and a scalable rollout strategy for our platform design partners. Success will be evaluated based on delivered outcomes and adoption within critical workflows rather than mere activity metrics.
Your success will be quantified through impactful platform outcomes, which include successful deployments that deliver measurable value aligned with customer objectives, foster user adoption, and become integral to their workflows. Additional success metrics will encompass delivery reliability (on-time milestones, minimal reopen/churn), operational leverage (reuse of patterns across deployments), capacity for sound judgment under pressure, and product impact (field data that influences roadmaps and architectures).
This position is based in San Francisco or New York City. Our hybrid work model requires employees to be in the office three days per week. We provide relocation assistance, and travel up to 50% is expected.
In This Role, You Will
Define Pilot Scope and Success Criteria: Collaborate with customer sponsors and technical leads to translate goals into actionable plans, measurable outcomes, and clear acceptance criteria.
Oversee Delivery Plans Across Workstreams: Manage the delivery process across multiple interdependent streams to ensure cohesive execution and successful deployment.
