About the job
Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) is dedicated to combating poverty and advocating for racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. With a legacy spanning over 50 years, we actively confront systemic injustices that perpetuate poverty while delivering essential legal services to support our clients' basic needs for housing, income, economic stability, family and immigration security, education, and healthcare. As the nation's largest provider of civil legal services, our team of over 600 professionals operates from neighborhood-based offices and outreach sites across all five boroughs, assisting hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers each year. We collaborate with numerous community-based organizations, client-led groups, public officials, pro bono attorneys, and the judiciary to enhance our impact. Our mission is to combat discrimination and foster equity for all low-income New Yorkers.
At LSNYC, employees have abundant opportunities for career growth and professional development, including access to our internal Justice Learning Center, offering chances to earn free CLEs and gain experience as a trainer.
BROOKLYN LEGAL SERVICES
Summer/Fall 2026 Legal Internships - LGBTQ/HIV Advocacy Project
The LGBTQ/HIV Advocacy Project at Brooklyn Legal Services is inviting applications from law students for legal internships during the summer and fall of 2026. Our unit offers general practice legal services to low-income individuals within the LGBTQ community and those living with HIV and AIDS. Areas of practice include anti-discrimination, eviction defense, government benefits, confidentiality issues, appeals for denied gender-affirming care, name and gender marker changes, identity document updates, and various other legal matters.
Interns will collaborate closely with staff attorneys and clients, taking on responsibilities such as client interviews, legal research, drafting internal memos, preparing pleadings, engaging with local and state agencies, and representing clients in administrative hearings and city/state court. Interns will also participate in intake clinics at community organizations and represent our project at various outreach events, including Brooklyn Pride during the summer.
