About the job

Astranis is at the forefront of satellite technology, creating advanced satellites designed for high orbits that extend humanity's reach into the solar system. Currently, our satellites deliver dedicated, secure networks to a diverse range of sophisticated clients, including large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the U. S. military. With five satellites successfully in orbit and numerous launches planned, we manage a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts.

As the preferred satellite communications partner for clients with rigorous demands for uptime, data security, network visibility, and customization, Astranis has attracted over $750 million from some of the world's leading investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Blackrock, and Fidelity. Our dynamic team of 450 engineers and entrepreneurs operates from our expansive 153,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Northern California.

Senior Thermal Engineer

As a Senior Thermal Engineer at Astranis, you will play a pivotal role in designing, evaluating, and testing thermal solutions that range from electronic chips to comprehensive spacecraft thermal vacuum assessments. A strong background in problem-solving and practical testing skills is essential. While experience in spacecraft or printed circuit board thermal mitigation is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite.

Role Responsibilities

  • Identify and refine feasible thermal architectures, advancing designs through conceptual, preliminary, and detailed phases using a combination of passive and active thermal control techniques.
  • Lead design trades that effectively balance performance margins, resource utilization, risk, cost, and scheduling.
  • Conduct thermal analyses with varying levels of fidelity on diverse hardware types, including propulsion components, batteries, high-powered electronics, RF components, mechanisms, and printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Design, evaluate, procure, and test thermal solutions, including heaters, heat pipes, thermal interface materials, and surface coatings.
  • Create processes and procedures for the integration and assembly of thermal systems to ensure adherence to design intent. Collaborate closely with the integration and test team during the installation of thermal hardware.
  • Plan and oversee thermal vacuum testing and verification at both the component and spacecraft levels.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering their professional development.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new team members as we expand rapidly.
