This Los Angeles-based position is central to developing bid strategies and preparing detailed estimates for public works projects. Working in a self-perform general engineering contractor setting, the Senior Estimator directly influences project backlog and company revenue. This is a hands-on role focused on active estimating, not just oversight.
What you will do
- Oversee the full estimating process for heavy civil and underground utility projects, from initial bid solicitation through final submission.
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates, considering labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and production rates.
- Analyze plans, specifications, and civil drawings to determine scope, assess risks, and confirm constructability.
- Create and manage bid schedules to meet all deadlines and deliverables.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to gather and confirm pricing that aligns with project needs.
- Collaborate with field operations teams to validate production rates and construction approaches.
- Use historical data and current market trends to improve estimate accuracy and maintain competitiveness.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering and cost savings during preconstruction.
- Present bid packages to company leadership, clearly outlining margin strategies and risk considerations.
- Mentor junior estimators and contribute to the development of consistent estimating standards and processes.
