Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:At least seven years of post-secondary education or relevant professional experience. Master’s or PhD in Computational Sciences, including but not limited to Physics, Biology, Neuroscience, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field. A minimum of five years of experience in data science or a related quantitative role. Proficiency in R, Python, SQL, and other relevant programming languages. Familiarity with AWS (RDS, EC2, S3, etc.) or experience with Azure or Google Cloud is preferred. Experience with supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques. Advanced statistical expertise, with extensive experience in statistical modeling, regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and causal analysis. Familiarity with utilizing LLM APIs for research purposes.

Job Summary:

As a Senior Data Scientist at the esteemed Digital Data Design Institute (D^3) of Harvard University, you will play a pivotal role within the D^3 Data Science Team. Your work will involve close collaboration with faculty and researchers from the Harvard Business School (HBS) on impactful social science research projects that intersect with business, management, digital transformation, data science, and artificial intelligence. Your efforts will focus on leveraging AI to explore its implications for business and society through rigorous experimental research, while also contributing to the development of machine learning (ML) and AI tools for the broader research community.

In this role, you will serve as a knowledgeable guide and resource for researchers of varying expertise in data methodologies and cutting-edge technologies. Effective communication regarding these technologies is essential, as is the agility to learn new skills rapidly and manage multiple concurrent projects of differing scopes and complexities.


Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Extract, clean, explore, and analyze data from diverse sources, including organizational, public, and experimental datasets.
  • Engage in project intake and assignment processes within the D^3 Data Science Team.
  • Design and conduct data science and AI experiments alongside partner organizations.
  • Develop and apply a variety of models and analyses to derive insights and guide strategic decisions.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of data files, modeling methodologies, rationale, results, and annotated code.
  • Communicate and present data science methods and findings to faculty, managers, and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Mentor and train fellow data scientists, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, and PhD students.
  • Resolve complex issues collaboratively with other data scientists to devise effective solutions.
  • Document and share research findings with the community.
  • Foster trust and collaboration by actively engaging with colleagues and stakeholders on-site.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
