Qualifications

To excel in this role, we are seeking individuals who are not only technically skilled but also possess a keen sense of innovation and problem-solving. Your ability to integrate various engineering disciplines will be crucial in driving our projects forward.

About the job

Physical Intelligence is looking for a Mechatronics Engineering Intern to join the Hardware Engineering team in San Francisco. This position offers hands-on work building, troubleshooting, and refining robotic systems that support the company's data collection and model training efforts.

Team focus

The Hardware Engineering group designs and assembles robotic arms, mobile platforms, and end-effectors. Team members collaborate across mechanical, electrical, embedded, and software specialties. Projects often involve rapid prototyping, integrating subsystems, and improving the performance of robotic fleets in real-world deployments.

What you will do

  • Subsystem design and testing: Design, build, and test subsystems for robotic arms and mobile platforms, covering actuation, sensing, enclosures, and power systems.
  • Hands-on prototyping: Assemble, calibrate, and test prototypes in the hardware lab, working with arms, lifts, mobile bases, and end-effectors.
  • Cross-disciplinary integration: Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to diagnose issues and improve system performance.
  • Data-driven iteration: Use deployment data to inform design changes and increase reliability.
  • Full-stack subsystem ownership: Take projects from CAD design through PCB integration and bench testing.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or completed a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering. Outstanding personal projects, GitHub work, or portfolios may be considered for students earlier in their studies.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and electromechanical design, including dynamic loading and finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and mechatronic components such as CAN, BLDC control, and motor controllers.
  • Experience with CAD tools (NX, OnShape, SolidWorks) and rapid prototyping methods like 3D printing or laser cutting.
  • Basic skills in electrical design and debugging, including reading schematics, soldering, and using test equipment.
