Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. A minimum of 5 years of experience in protection and control system design, cost estimating, and bid document preparation for medium voltage electrical power projects. Professional Engineer (PE) license from a US State (NC and NY) is preferred. Proven track record in designing Protection and Control Systems. Strong understanding of IEEE, NERC, NEC, NESC, NEMA, and ANSI standards applicable to substation design. Experience in telecommunications, protective relaying, and automation (SCADA) is essential. Knowledge of low voltage coordination and arc flash studies is desirable. Familiarity with equipment from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, General Electric, and Basler is beneficial. Willingness to travel periodically to project sites.

LaBella Associates is on the lookout for a Senior Protection and Control Engineer to join our dynamic team in Rochester, New York. The ideal candidate will possess at least 5 years of experience in the detailed design of protection and control systems, along with expertise in cost estimation and bid document preparation across various sectors including commercial, industrial, generation, renewables, and utility power systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and modify one-line and three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel configurations, and cable lists for substations, including relay settings and configuration files.
  • Design auxiliary AC and DC power systems.
  • Create and refine technical specifications for major equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, control houses, and other high-voltage substation materials.
  • Collaborate with SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and control design staff to achieve seamless integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems.
  • Conduct basic calculations including voltage drop, CT burden and saturation, lighting, and short circuit analysis with minimal supervision.
  • Review and apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings independently.
  • Assist project managers in defining scopes of work and conceptual designs for various projects.
  • Engage in clear communication and coordination of project activities with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.
  • Take ownership of the quality and precision of your work.
  • Evaluate and review control features, communication protocols of protective relays, RTUs, LTC controllers, and other associated equipment, ensuring coordination of relay settings.
  • Participate in testing and commissioning activities related to system startups and functional checks as required.
