About the role

About Tin Can

At Tin Can, we're revolutionizing how children connect with their loved ones, all while being screen-free. Our delightful devices and services empower families to communicate without the distractions of modern technology.

We pride ourselves on cultivating a bold, authentic, and slightly quirky brand that appeals to those seeking a simpler, healthier alternative for their kids compared to today's tech-saturated lifestyles. As we expand to reach tens of thousands of families, the engineering foundation we establish this year will be crucial for ensuring stability and trust while continuously delivering what families truly need.

The Role

Having successfully launched a product loved by families, we are now seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the charge as we scale. Our current infrastructure is outgrowing its initial framework, and we need a leader who can reinforce what we’ve built, optimize our shipping processes, and establish the engineering backbone for our future growth.

In this pivotal role, you will oversee not just the engineering team and technical direction, but the entire spectrum of delivery, architecture, and the culture that empowers our small team to excel. Reporting directly to the Head of Product means you will be at the heart of every significant decision; collaboration between Product and Engineering is key to our success.

We are in search of engineers who have a product-oriented mindset and product professionals who understand engineering; you will set the tone for this synergy. Ultimately, everything we create is aimed at enhancing the experiences of children and families, which is our singular focus.

What You'll Do

  • Develop a robust and resilient platform that allows for the introduction of new features and products.

  • Establish the necessary engineering infrastructure, including CI/CD, proper environments, and deployment processes that enable confident team shipping.

  • Lead the engineering organization by defining technical direction, ensuring timely delivery, and fostering a scalable culture.

  • Proactively drive tasks to completion, manage competing priorities, and facilitate progress without waiting for direction.

  • Create an environment where team members can achieve the best work of their careers.

  • Leverage AI to accomplish results that would otherwise be unattainable.

  • Engage closely with the work to make informed decisions and earn the respect of your team; this is a hands-on leadership role.

We aim to simplify connections and foster meaningful interactions, free from digital distractions.
