Our mission over the next decade is to empower key researchers who will develop AI systems that are competent, trustworthy, and reliable, enabling fruitful collaborations with human scientists to foster the next generation of discoveries. The AI Institute focuses on three primary areas:
 
AI for Science – Enhancing scientific methodologies through AI, optimizing hypothesis generation, experiment conduction, data analysis, and knowledge creation to expedite the discovery process. Current exploratory projects include advancements in post-transistor hardware for AI and AI-enhanced scientific simulations.
Science of AI – Investigating and managing AI systems to mitigate risks associated with advanced AI. Our efforts aim to boost AI reliability and performance in areas lacking commercial interest, with ongoing programs like AI2050 and the Science of Trustworthy AI, alongside exploratory programs focusing on AI interpretability and the evolution of multi-agent communication.
Beneficial AI – Laying scientific foundations and curating datasets to understand AI's broader human impacts. This encompasses impactful grantmaking initiatives, such as the Humanities and AI Virtual Institute, which aims to leverage AI for advancements in humanities research, and the AI@Work program that quantifies AI's influence on the labor market.
 
Schmidt Sciences encompasses various programs associated with the AI Institute, including the Virtual Institute for Scientific Software (VISS), aimed at enhancing scientific software capabilities.
