About the job

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all New Yorkers. By supplying over 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, managing wastewater and stormwater, and mitigating air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution, DEP stands as the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the nation, employing nearly 6,000 individuals. Our extensive water supply system encompasses 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes, covering a 2,000 square mile watershed that stretches 125 miles north and west of New York City.

Within the Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC), we currently oversee a substantial portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected over the next decade. These critical projects enable DEP to maintain and operate an exemplary water supply system.

The Water System Capital Program (WSCP) is responsible for the planning, design, construction management, and construction efforts necessary to upgrade and maintain the Bureau of Water Supply’s essential infrastructure. BEDC delivers a robust multibillion-dollar capital program to develop new infrastructure and reconstruct existing assets, ensuring the integrity and high quality of the water supply. This work encompasses DEP's extensive network of facilities, including wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, reservoirs, tunnels, and pumping stations throughout New York City and its watershed.

We are seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to serve as an Assistant Project Manager within the WSCP directorate, based at our Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. Under supervision, you will report directly to an Accountable Manager and assist in supervising water and wastewater system projects within the watershed. Your responsibilities will include planning, coordinating, and directing the implementation of project designs and constructions. You will monitor permit requirements, address project issues, conduct field condition surveys, prepare detailed reports, and review contract documents for compliance. Active participation in field investigations to develop alternative solutions is essential, as is collaboration with the construction management team for inspections of construction activities.
