About the job

AECOM is on the lookout for a skilled and motivated Traction Power Engineer to become a vital part of our New England Transit Group, with the flexibility to operate from one of our regional offices in New England. The ideal candidate should possess in-depth knowledge of third rail systems and expertise in load flow studies, including the execution and analysis of these studies.

This role primarily involves preparing design drawings, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, and calculations related to traction power systems for electrified railways (both AC and DC). The successful candidate will not only perform project work but also take on the responsibilities of a technical leader.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide drafters, designers, and junior engineers in creating essential documents such as single-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA systems, communication layouts, conduit and cable sizing and routing, substation physical layouts, along with emergency trip, grounding, and lighting designs. This includes the selection and specification of substation equipment, proposal development, cost estimation, project scheduling, and field test plans.

  • Conduct protective relay settings and coordination studies.

  • Execute grounding design, load flow, harmonic analysis, power flow calculations, voltage drop assessments, protective relay settings, and coordination, as well as arc flash studies utilizing specialized software.

  • Advise on compliance with relevant client, local, state, and federal regulations, including AREMA standards, the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), the National Electric Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US standards.

  • Collaborate closely with diverse system disciplines to develop comprehensive systemwide duct bank drawings and assist CAD teams in BIM clash detection.

  • Provide value engineering insights on traction power systems.

  • Perform technical reviews of designs produced by team members.

  • Engage with other technical disciplines such as communications systems, overhead catenary/third rail systems, electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, track, and civil engineering.

  • Work alongside Senior Traction Power Engineers throughout the design process, emphasizing constructability.
