This Staff Engineer, User Trust position is based at the Betterment headquarters in NYC, with an in-office schedule of four days per week and additional flexibility during summer and winter holidays.

Role overview

The User Trust team is responsible for building systems and experiences that reinforce trust for users, partners, and regulators. Areas of focus include user privacy, compliance, account access, KYC, risk scoring, login and account recovery, and fraud prevention. The team operates at the intersection of security, legal and compliance, risk management, and product engineering. Their mission is to deliver scalable, reliable solutions that protect customers, reduce fraud, and meet regulatory requirements.

As a staff engineer, this role involves designing and implementing advanced systems, leading full-stack development, and collaborating with other senior engineers. The aim is to improve performance, reliability, and the developer experience across Betterment's technology platform.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and build systems that strengthen user trust, privacy, and security
  • Improve compliance, KYC, risk scoring, and fraud prevention processes
  • Lead full-stack development and partner with senior engineering leaders

Compensation

New York City salary range: $200,000 - $238,000

This position may also qualify for variable compensation through a company incentive bonus.
