About the job

Waymo is a pioneering autonomous driving technology firm dedicated to becoming the world's most reliable driver. Originating as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been committed to developing the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to enhance mobility access and prevent countless lives lost to traffic accidents. The Waymo Driver fuels Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hailing service and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over ten million rider-only trips and autonomous driving experience across 100 million miles on public roads, in addition to tens of billions of miles in simulations across more than 15 U. S. states, we are setting new standards in safety and efficiency.

The Planner Evaluation team is tackling one of the most critical challenges in autonomous driving: assessing and enhancing the quality of the software that controls the vehicle. We seek seasoned data-driven software engineers and data scientists to elevate how we assess and characterize changes in the Onboard software stack (including Planner and Perception).

Your primary responsibility will be to streamline, validate, manage, and organize the most prevalent safety metrics at Waymo. This role will require deep collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders to grasp the fundamental applications of these safety metrics. Through a comprehensive understanding of the data, you will provide expert recommendations on the best solutions and their interpretations. You will also validate and enhance metric quality to meet the expanding use cases of Waymo's products, including new platforms and territories. If you are passionate about autonomous vehicles and leveraging complex data to inform decision-making, this opportunity is for you!

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Data Science Manager.
