Familiarity with AI/ML algorithms and a passion for autonomous technology will set candidates apart.

About the job

Waymo is a pioneering autonomous driving technology company dedicated to becoming the world's most trusted driver. Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has consistently focused on developing the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to enhance mobility access and prevent the tragic loss of lives in traffic accidents. The Waymo Driver powers our fully autonomous ride-hailing service and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and use cases. With over ten million rider-only trips completed, our technology has accumulated more than 100 million miles driven autonomously on public roads and tens of billions of miles in simulation across 15+ states in the U. S.

The Software Quality Operations (SWQOps) team is crucial in ensuring the Waymo Driver’s safety, reliability, and quality. Our mission is to develop a scalable and adaptable operation, increasingly enhanced by AI, to provide essential insights for the confident deployment and expansion of Waymo's autonomous vehicle services.

Why This Team is Vital to Waymo’s Growth:

As Waymo experiences rapid expansion, targeting approximately 20 new cities by the end of 2026, the SWQOps team is integral to this growth, enabling safe and efficient scaling. The Scenario Operations team within SWQOps is responsible for the effective delivery and maintenance of simulation-based directed testing coverage, which assesses the safety and performance of the Waymo Driver as we scale. As a Technical Specialist in Scenario Operations, you will serve as the Subject Matter Expert, bridging the gap between our simulation software capabilities and real-world operational execution.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Tooling Development & Optimization: Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to design, test, and deploy state-of-the-art simulation tools, ensuring they integrate human-in-the-loop (HITL) precision with AI-driven automation for scalable test coverage.
  • Rapid Issue Response: Lead technical processes for rapid-response simulation-based scenario testing. When field issues arise, leverage your deep understanding of the A/V software stack and our tools to facilitate root-cause analysis and fix validation.
  • Policy Development: Act as a key liaison between AI/ML development and operational execution. Define and document new policies, guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that incorporate advanced tools and insights into daily vendor workflows.
  • Quality Assurance: Oversee quality assurance processes ensuring the integrity and functionality of simulation tools in testing environments.
