About the role

Join 1X as a Senior/Staff Firmware Engineer focusing on Battery Management Systems

At 1X, we are pioneering the future of AI and robotics in Palo Alto, California, with a mission to foster a society enriched by general-purpose robots capable of autonomously executing diverse tasks.

We envision a world where humanoid robots learn and evolve alongside humans. Our commitment to developing friendly home robots ensures they are seamlessly integrated into daily life.

If you are curious, driven, and passionate about shaping the future of robotics and AI, we would love to connect and discuss your potential contributions to our mission.

Role Overview

We are seeking a versatile Firmware/Embedded Engineer to lead the development and maintenance of battery management firmware for our cutting-edge humanoid robots. You will be responsible for firmware that monitors, protects, and manages high-energy lithium-ion battery packs under challenging and dynamic load conditions.

Collaborating closely with hardware architects, electrical engineers, systems engineers, and test engineers, you will ensure that firmware effectively bridges hardware capabilities and system requirements across both prototype and production platforms.

The battery systems in our humanoid robots function uniquely compared to traditional applications, facing severe and unpredictable load transients. You will need to develop firmware that can handle peak currents which may cause significant bus voltage sag in milliseconds, while ensuring the pack can endure continuous cycling in uncontrolled thermal environments, all while maintaining cell-level safety and accurate state estimation.

Ideal candidates will possess a strong understanding of electrochemistry and circuit fundamentals, are adept at building reliable firmware for safety-critical systems, and are comfortable innovating where existing vendor toolchains and application notes may fall short.
