As the founding Lead Data Scientist of the SCORPIO team, you will be responsible for:Establishing the vision, strategy, and technical roadmap for data-driven capacity planning and resource optimization within Waymo's simulation environment. Leading the development and execution of advanced forecasting models to anticipate demand for various TI resources (CPU, GPU, Storage, Bandwidth, RAM) across multiple timeframes and simulation workflows. Designing, constructing, and maintaining comprehensive capacity models, key performance indicators, and informative dashboards to track resource utilization, identify current and future bottlenecks, and guide investment decisions. Formulating and presenting actionable strategies for resource optimization, cost management, and risk mitigation to senior leadership, finance, and engineering teams. Collaborating extensively with Simulation, Infrastructure, Finance, Product Management, and Engineering teams to understand demand drivers, usage trends, system changes, and their effects on resource requirements. Leading the design and development of automated systems for demand management, quota allocation, and resource reassignment to improve efficiency and responsiveness. Providing data-driven insights to shape the design of simulation products and user guidelines, fostering more efficient resource consumption patterns. Building and mentoring a high-performing team that may include data scientists, business analysts, and software engineers.

We are launching an innovative team known as SCORPIO (SimEval Capacity Operations, Resource Planning, Infrastructure Optimization). This team will play a crucial role in optimizing the utilization of Waymo’s extensive simulation compute, storage, and network resources. SCORPIO will focus on creating data-driven models, metrics, and processes for demand forecasting, capacity planning, and resource allocation optimization, thereby enhancing developer experiences and maximizing infrastructure investment returns.
