A Senior Phlebotomist plays a vital role in patient care by expertly determining the most effective methods for blood collection, preparing specimens for laboratory analysis, and conducting various screening procedures.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure test requisitions are accurate by cross-referencing details with the nursing station log; promptly address any discrepancies with unit personnel.
- Confirm patient identity through verification of identification details.
- Collect blood specimens through venipunctures and finger sticks.
- Preserve specimen integrity by adhering to aseptic techniques and departmental protocols; observe isolation procedures as necessary.
- Maintain accurate tracking of collected specimens by initialing, dating, and recording collection times; keep daily tallies of collections performed.
- Uphold quality results by following departmental procedures and testing schedules; document outcomes in the quality-control log; identify and report necessary adjustments.
- Ensure a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by complying with standards and legal regulations.
- Resolve unusual test orders by consulting with physicians, pathologists, nursing staff, or reference laboratories; refer unresolved orders back to the originator for clarification; notify supervisors of any outstanding issues.
- Enhance professional knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities, reading relevant publications, and networking within professional organizations.
- Boost the reputation of the phlebotomy department and hospital by taking ownership of new and diverse requests; explore ways to enhance job value.
- This role involves regular interaction with Protected Health Information (PHI) in both paper and electronic formats, necessitating access to various technologies to perform job functions.
- Completion of HIPAA/PHI privacy, General Policies and Procedures Compliance training, and security training is required within the first 30 days of employment.
- Maintain current status on Natera's training requirements.
- Responsible for logistical management and printing of patient reports for the assigned area.
- Assist with billing inquiries and triage as necessary.
