Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in mechanical engineering, particularly with experience in designing and analyzing complex systems. Candidates should have proficiency in CAD software, a solid understanding of thermal and structural analysis, and experience with electromechanical systems. A passion for space exploration and a desire to contribute to significant technological advancements are essential.

About the job

At SpaceX, we believe that a future where humanity explores the stars is more exhilarating than one where we remain on Earth. Our mission is to develop technologies that will enable human life on Mars.

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER, SATELLITE SYSTEMS (STARLINK)

Starlink, the world's largest satellite constellation, is revolutionizing broadband internet access globally. By utilizing our expertise in rocket and spacecraft engineering, we deploy thousands of satellites each year, currently serving over five million customers across more than 120 countries. Our team designs, builds, tests, and operates every aspect of the system—from satellite hardware and user antennas that connect quickly upon unboxing to the integrated software that ties it all together. With plans for continual growth in hardware capabilities and expanding bandwidth, we are seeking exceptional engineers to join our mission.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer within our satellite vehicle engineering organization, you will tackle intricate structural, thermal, and electromechanical challenges associated with the space-grade hardware that powers our satellites. You will oversee the complete design lifecycle, from ideation and design to testing, manufacturing, and large-scale production. Collaboration with a diverse range of cross-functional engineering disciplines will be essential as we work together to democratize internet access worldwide. Various sub-teams exist within the vehicle engineering group, each concentrating on distinct focus areas. Applicants will be evaluated for compatibility with all teams before being matched to a specific area based on technical fit and team requirements.

  • Mechanisms Team: Focus on end-to-end electromechanical design for actuators, reaction wheels, torque rods, solar arrays, and more.
  • Space Lasers Team: Collaborate with the optical team to design opto-mechanical assemblies for our cutting-edge Space Lasers and other optical payloads.
  • Bus Avionics Team: Work alongside Bus electrical engineers to design mechanical avionics modules, thermal and structural components, new component selection, harnessing, and integration to satellites.
  • Structural Team: Engage in the design and analysis of the primary satellite structure, including chassis, ribs, rails, and propulsion tanks.
  • Solar Arrays Team: Participate in the design and production of the world’s most prolific space solar arrays, from flight array design to testing and factory production processes.

About SpaceX
