Qualifications OverviewWe are looking for a passionate and skilled engineer who is excited to take on challenges in the realm of robotic actuators. If you are innovative, detail-oriented, and eager to make a significant impact in the field of robotics, we encourage you to apply!

About the job

Join our innovative team at Fauna Robotics as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, where you will be instrumental in designing and developing cutting-edge actuator assemblies that drive our advanced robotic systems. You will be responsible for leading the mechanical architecture, conducting detailed CAD/FEA analysis, and validating tests for our ultra-compact, high-torque actuators, guiding them from initial concept to production release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and evaluate actuator concepts, including custom gear trains, bearings, and housings, to achieve stringent torque-to-weight and thermal performance targets.
  • Lead detailed design efforts using 3D CAD, GD&T, tolerance stacks, and structural/thermal FEA.
  • Rapidly prototype designs, develop test fixtures, and characterize key performance metrics such as torque, efficiency, backlash, and thermal rise.
  • Implement DFM/DFA methodologies, release drawings and BOMs, and work closely with suppliers for pilot builds.
  • Collaborate across departments, including controls, firmware, and manufacturing, to enhance overall system performance.
  • Manage relationships with expert independent contractors to leverage specialized skills.
  • Collaborate with industrial design and systems engineering teams to balance aesthetic, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 6 years of experience in designing precision actuators, motors, or motion-control hardware that has been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep expertise in gear train mechanisms (planetary, harmonic, cycloidal), bearing and shaft design, thermal management, and lubrication techniques.
    • Proficient in CAD software (Onshape or SolidWorks) and structural/thermal FEA analysis.
    • Hands-on experience in prototyping, machining, and conducting failure root cause analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in scaling prototypes to production levels exceeding 100 units.
  • Familiarity with frameless permanent magnet motors and rotor/stator integration.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python) for design automation and data analysis.
