About Unity Advisory
Unity Advisory is an experience-driven CFO advisory firm focused on finance, commercial, tax, and deal support. Free from audit conflicts, the firm integrates automation, analytics, and AI into every engagement. The team values clarity, practical results, and swift, actionable insights for CFOs making critical decisions.
Role Overview: Senior Manager – R&D Tax (Technology & Science)
This Senior Manager will play a key role in Unity Advisory’s growing R&D tax practice. The position centers on technical and scientific analysis at the intersection of innovation and taxation. The Senior Manager works directly with engineers, scientists, product teams, and CTOs to identify and communicate the qualifying R&D activities that underpin each claim.
Clients include AI-driven startups, biotech firms, and advanced manufacturing companies. The Senior Manager leads technical interviews, drafts scientific and technological narratives for claim reports, and ensures all qualifying projects are documented accurately in line with DSIT Guidelines and HMRC’s competent professional test. Close collaboration with Partners and the Tax & Costing team is expected, especially in developing and refining AI-powered workflows to improve technical documentation and knowledge capture.
This is not a standard report-writing job. The firm seeks someone with genuine scientific curiosity, a critical approach to complex R&D programs, and an interest in shaping how AI enhances technical documentation and client service.
What You’ll Do
- Lead technical discovery during client engagements by interviewing engineers, scientists, product managers, and R&D leaders to uncover qualifying activities.
- Draft and review HMRC-compliant technical narratives that clearly explain the scientific or technological advances pursued, the uncertainties faced, and why these could not be easily resolved by a competent professional.
- Apply DSIT Guidelines and HMRC’s Guidelines for Compliance (GfC) to assess eligibility across sectors such as software engineering, AI/ML, life sciences, materials science, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
- Critically evaluate whether client projects truly meet the criteria for an advance in science or technology, ensuring thorough documentation and compliance.
