Role Overview

The Senior Manager - R&D Tax (Tax & Costing) will join Unity Advisory's growing R&D tax practice. This role manages both the financial and technical aspects of R&D tax engagements, from cost identification through to HMRC-compliant submissions. The position involves working with a variety of clients, from startups to large enterprises, ensuring R&D claims are defensible, optimized, and aligned with current HMRC requirements.

Collaboration with Partners and the Technology & Science team is central, especially when applying analytical methods to complex cost structures and advancing automation and AI in costing and compliance processes. The role calls for someone ready to challenge outdated practices and help build AI-driven workflows that enhance efficiency and accuracy for clients.

What You Will Do

  • Oversee the end-to-end financial and tax-technical delivery of R&D tax claims, including cost identification, apportionment, computations, CT600 adjustments, and HMRC submission.
  • Analyze client cost bases to identify and quantify qualifying direct and indirect R&D expenditures under the merged RDEC scheme and Enhanced R&D Intensive Support (ERIS) regime.
  • Lead detailed cost reviews with finance teams, examining trial balances, payroll records, subcontractor agreements, cloud computing expenses, data license costs, and overhead allocation methods.
  • Manage the complexities of the merged scheme, including international expenditure restrictions, PAYE/NIC cap mechanics, subsidized expenditure rules, and claim notification requirements.
  • Prepare and review comprehensive claim reports and supporting schedules that meet HMRC standards, including all required Additional Information for successful submissions.
