Qualifications

Key Responsibilities: Design and Train Distilled Models: Architect and implement teacher-student model frameworks for multimodal sensor data. Create training pipelines for knowledge distillation while ensuring high accuracy and significantly reduced inference latencies and memory use. Leverage Reinforcement Learning for Data Discovery: Develop reinforcement learning-based policy learning and reasoning systems for autonomous driving. Scale RL training workflows (e.g., PPO, DQN, actor-critic methods) for both simulation and real-world applications. Investigate reward shaping, environment modeling, and multi-agent RL as relevant. Optimize Model Deployment for Real-Time Use: Work alongside backend engineers to launch distilled and RL models into production environments. Focus on optimizing latency, throughput, and hardware efficiency across GPU/CPU clusters. Implement model versioning, A/B testing, and performance monitoring to identify regressions. Research and Integrate Agentic Systems: Investigate and prototype agentic workflows for autonomous reasoning, chain-of-thought prompting, and goal-oriented behaviors. Integrate these systems into our broader autonomy stack, whether for experimental or production use. Enhance Production Reliability: Establish patterns and practices...

About the job

At Motional, we are revolutionizing the way autonomous vehicles extract vital insights from extensive multimodal sensor data. Our advanced autonomous driving architecture relies on identifying rare edge cases, long-tail scenarios, and significant model inaccuracies. Our innovative framework, Omnitag, serves as the driving force behind this data discovery.

In your role as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer within the Data Mining team, you will be tasked with creating the "Brain" of this framework: designing large-scale multimodal Teacher models that interpret the world and refining them into hyper-efficient Student models capable of analyzing exabytes of data in near real-time. You will operate at the crossroads of large-scale representation learning, retrieval optimization, and reasoning systems. Your contributions will profoundly impact how we encapsulate knowledge into streamlined encoders for rapid searches, as well as how we utilize reinforcement learning to enhance data discovery processes and intelligent querying. By developing smarter mining tools, you will expedite the entire model enhancement lifecycle for teams engaged in post-training evaluations, error diagnostics, and dataset refinement.
