Key ResponsibilitiesProvide functional safety guidance in the definition of vehicle feature requirements. Conduct vehicle-level HARA, develop safety goals, and perform DFMEA and FTA analyses. Document and maintain requirements in Rivian's requirements tool, ensuring high traceability and quality. Develop specifications for test cases tied to safety requirements. Support bench and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, as well as system and vehicle validation of functional safety requirements. Act as a liaison for the functional safety team, collaborating with engineering departments to provide technical consultation, guidance, and approval for internal and external development initiatives.

Role overview

The Senior Functional Safety Engineer - Battery Systems role focuses on high voltage battery systems. This position ensures ISO 26262 standards are applied throughout the product development lifecycle, supporting the safety of electric vehicle high voltage systems. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is central, especially when defining and assessing vehicle features, performing Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARA), and setting safety objectives for components such as the HV battery, On-Board Charger, and DCDC converters.

Key responsibilities

  • Create and manage safety requirements from concept to validation
  • Develop test cases and support both bench and in-vehicle testing
  • Maintain traceability of safety requirements using requirements management tools
  • Advise engineering teams on functional safety compliance as a technical reference
  • Conduct independent reviews of engineering deliverables for high voltage systems
