Organizational Context/Position Summary:
The Engineering & Utilities (E&U) department is responsible for the management and operation of energy supplies, district energy plants, and utility infrastructures across the Cambridge and Allston campuses. This includes a 24/7 facilities-related call center, alarm monitoring, and dispatch services, as well as providing engineering and technical support.
This role encompasses senior-level electrical engineering responsibilities for the planning, design, technical support, operation, maintenance, and upgrades of the University’s utility infrastructure. This includes electric, steam, hot water, chilled water, energy/building management, and utility metering systems. The position will also involve executing special short- and long-range projects as directed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Collaborate with E&U leadership to develop, refine, and uphold campus utility systems while coordinating with the needs of the University’s Schools and Units. Supervise the installation and relocation of underground utility infrastructures with minimal disruption to the University community. Assume full engineering accountability for utility distribution systems, ensuring capability, flexibility, reliability, safety, economic operation, and expansion considerations. Formulate and manage long and short-range plans and budgets regarding utility distribution upgrades. Generate distribution system statistics, records, and drawings, and contribute to the documentation of utility infrastructure for record-keeping.
Maintain effective communication and relationships with governmental agencies to ensure the University’s interests are addressed safely, reliably, economically, and with minimal disruption. Stay updated with relevant government standards concerning employee environmental health and safety. Keep abreast of federal, state, municipal, industry, and University codes, regulations, practices, trends, and guidelines, along with the latest innovations in electrical design and equipment.
Engage and work alongside E&U staff and partner groups to leverage systems, data, and reporting for E&U’s KPI monitoring and operational analysis. As stewards of university energy and utility systems, provide technical assistance to Campus Services personnel and support for the operation and maintenance of central energy and utility production/distribution systems as needed. Evaluate and recommend enhancements for preventive maintenance, inspection, and testing programs for the University’s electrical distribution systems, central chilled water and steam plants, and related electrical systems and equipment. Identify and develop cost control opportunities and system cost planning.
