We are looking for a highly skilled designer who can marry sophisticated design execution with imaginative thinking, contributing to the evolution of our visual identities across diverse projects for marketing, editorial, and events.

Established in 1828, The Spectator is the world’s oldest continuous weekly magazine, renowned for its insightful political and cultural commentary. Our design team is pivotal in translating our journalism into compelling visuals across various formats.

Our Design Portfolio

  • Weekly Print Magazine: Our flagship publication boasts sophisticated layouts, custom illustrations, and iconic cover designs that have defined British journalism.
  • Digital: Crafting responsive web designs, engaging email newsletters, and a user-friendly app that caters to our growing online audience, alongside social media assets that amplify our journalism.
  • Events & Broadcast: Comprehensive design support for our expanding portfolio of live events, including stage graphics, presentation materials, event signage, and branded environments, as well as assets for video content and podcast artwork.
  • Marketing & Campaigns: Creating promotional materials, merchandise, subscriber communications, and integrated campaigns across both print and digital channels.
  • Commercial & Partnerships: Delivering bespoke design work for commercial clients, sponsored content, advertising features, and partnership initiatives that uphold editorial integrity while achieving commercial aims.

Key Responsibilities

Design Execution

  • Contribute innovative cover ideas and finalize cover designs.
  • Produce digital assets such as web graphics, social media content, and email newsletters.
  • Design event materials, presentations, and broadcast graphics.
  • Develop commercial and sponsored content that aligns with brand guidelines.
  • Create visual identities and necessary assets for new launches.
  • Produce brand materials and campaign assets across various channels.

Creative Development

  • Collaborate with the Head of Design to evolve The Spectator’s visual language.
  • Propose creative design solutions that enhance storytelling.
  • Engage in idea generation during creative briefings and brainstorming sessions.
  • Keep abreast of design trends while honoring our publication's heritage.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all touchpoints.

Team Collaboration

  • Work efficiently within project timelines and coordinate with various stakeholders.
