Why This Role is Essential
The OHS Officer plays a vital role in overseeing daily safety operations at the STP by ensuring adherence to safe work practices, monitoring compliance, conducting thorough field inspections, and supporting training, permit systems, and incident reporting. This position focuses on the execution of established safety protocols rather than managerial duties.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a prominent presence in operational areas during maintenance and routine activities, actively ensuring compliance with safety regulations, Life Saving Rules, and site procedures, and intervening immediately in unsafe situations, including halting work when necessary.
- Ensure that Permit-to-Work (PTW) and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) protocols are accurately applied prior to and during tasks, verify isolation points and tagging, coordinate with supervisors, and promptly escalate any identified gaps.
- Carry out regular safety inspections and OHS observations in areas such as MCC rooms, pump stations, sludge handling zones, confined spaces, and chemical areas. Document findings using approved formats and follow up on corrective actions.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings, ensuring attendance is recorded and emphasizing task-specific hazards before engaging in high-risk activities such as confined space entry, lifting, electrical work, and chemical handling.
- Monitor the usage and condition of personal protective equipment (PPE), confirming its suitability based on the task and area, and report any shortages, misuse, or damage, without being responsible for PPE policy development.
- Assist in the reporting of incidents and near misses by gathering essential facts, photographs, and statements, and support investigations led by the OHS Engineer.
- Facilitate site inductions and on-the-job maintenance training sessions, ensuring attendance records are completed and submitted.
- Supervise housekeeping standards in operational areas and collaborate with supervisors to address unsafe conditions that may lead to slips, trips, fire hazards, or access obstructions.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records, including inspection checklists, PTW logs, training attendance sheets, and observation trackers, and ensure timely submission of reports.
- Promptly raise safety concerns to the OHS Engineer or O&M Manager and refrain from assuming responsibility or resolving issues beyond your designated authority.
