Nu Quantum draws on over ten years of research from the Cavendish Laboratory, focusing on quantum information systems. The team works where quantum computing meets advanced photonic technology, aiming to accelerate the deployment and capabilities of quantum systems. Partnerships with industry leaders and academic collaborators support the development of scalable quantum networking frameworks.
Role overview
This Optics Engineer role centers on designing, developing, optimizing, and automating advanced optical systems for Nu Quantum’s qubit-photon interface (QPI). The position combines hands-on work with optical setups, microcavity assembly, and system automation. Collaboration is key, with frequent interaction alongside experts in nanofabrication, electronics, mechanical engineering, and software development.
Main responsibilities
- Design and automate optical setups for assembling and characterizing microcavities.
- Engineer advanced laser and imaging systems; provide optical design and support for AMO experiments.
- Lead the design and execution of advanced optical experiments and system builds.
- Develop and implement automation to improve efficiency and control in optical experiments.
- Align and optimize free-space and fiber-based optical setups to meet strict performance targets.
- Collect experimental data, analyze results, and draw practical conclusions.
- Document methodologies, outcomes, and insights to support reproducibility.
- Communicate complex technical ideas clearly in reports and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Work closely with nanofabrication, electronics, mechanical, and software teams to develop and carry out integrated testing and development plans.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
- MSc or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven experience designing and implementing optical systems.
