Design and assemble cutting-edge optical analytical instruments, including Raman, FTIR, fluorescence, and scattering systems, from initial concept through component selection to bench assembly and validation.Engage in hands-on prototyping to address optical and mechanical design challenges, creating custom components and fixtures while iterating rapidly to achieve performance targets.Integrate optical components with detectors, light sources, motion systems, electronics, fluidics, and software to deliver comprehensive functional prototypes.Conduct testing and validation by planning experiments, analyzing data, and troubleshooting to enhance signal-to-noise ratio, resolution, stability, and dynamic range while ensuring compliance with specifications.Act as the in-house subject-matter expert in spectroscopy, providing insights on component selection (such as gratings, filters, objectives, fibers, and detectors), system architecture, and experimental methodologies.Maintain thorough documentation, including design files, BOMs, alignment procedures, and test reports, ensuring reproducibility and supporting IP filings and the transition to manufacturing.Collaborate cross-functionally with scientists, assay developers, data scientists, and QA/RA teams to ensure instruments fulfill biological, analytical, and regulatory requirements.Uphold lab and laser safety standards while supporting design controls and documentation according to ISO 13485 and related regulations.Monitor advancements in spectroscopy and optics, prototyping and assessing new architectures to enhance platform capabilities.This role is based in London and involves collaboration with teams in the UK and internationally.
