Qualifications

Your Role:As a Plasma Data Scientist at Helion, you will specialize in physics-based machine learning to enhance the modeling of experimental FRC plasma. Your responsibilities will include developing and validating sophisticated ML frameworks—such as differentiable physics models, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), surrogate modeling, and hybrid physics-ML systems. You will integrate these models into simulation and diagnostics workflows, supporting multidisciplinary fusion research and contributing to impactful modeling that shapes experimental design and analysis. Key Responsibilities:Design and validate machine-learning frameworks for FRC plasma dynamics using physics-informed approaches (e.g., differentiable physics, PINNs, surrogate modeling, or hybrid systems). Seamlessly integrate ML models with existing simulation tools and experimental diagnostic pipelines to create hybrid validation workflows. Reproduce experimental plasma conditions within ML modeling frameworks to aid in the interpretation of magnetic diffusion, circuit response, and diagnostic measurements. Create analysis scripts for post-processing, parsing model outputs, and visualizing correlations between ML predictions and experimental results. Collaborate with experts in plasma physics, pulsed power, and transient magnetics to enhance the fidelity and relevance of fusion research.

About the job

About Helion

Helion is at the forefront of fusion energy innovation, headquartered in Everett, WA. Our mission is to create the world's first fusion power plant, paving the way for a future filled with limitless clean electricity. We envision a world where energy is not only clean but also reliable and affordable for everyone.

Since our inception in 2013, we have successfully raised over $1 billion from esteemed investors, including Sam Altman, Mithril, and Capricorn Investment Group, along with new partners such as SoftBank and Lightspeed. Our latest prototype, Trenta, achieved a remarkable milestone with 10,000 high-power pulses, reaching plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). We are currently advancing with our next prototype, Polaris, on our journey toward the world’s first fusion power plant.

This is an exciting time to join Helion as we confront real-world challenges. We prioritize urgency, rigor, ownership, and honesty—values that are crucial for achieving unprecedented milestones in energy technology. Together, we can transform the energy landscape because the world can’t afford to wait.
