KUSA, the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in Denver, CO, is redefining the way we collect and deliver news. We are seeking a Dynamic Story Desk Editor to champion our evolution into the newsroom of the future.
This hybrid role melds the expertise of an assignment editor and a digital content producer, serving as the pivotal hub of our newsroom. The Story Desk Editor spearheads daily editorial initiatives, curates and crafts impactful narratives, and ensures our content resonates genuinely with audiences across streaming, digital, social, and broadcast platforms.
Role Summary
As a Story Desk Editor, you will be an integral part of the Story Management Desk (SMD), a cohesive unit that streamlines the legacy assignment and digital desks. The SMD model guarantees a unified, efficient workflow for planning, producing, and curating stories across various platforms.
You will oversee coverage during breaking news, shape daily story planning, and curate content across platforms. This role demands decisive editorial judgment, exceptional writing skills, and the capacity to excel under tight deadlines. Collaborating with MSJs, producers, and photojournalists, you will deliver accurate, relevant, and engaging stories that serve the community.
Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage newsroom coverage during breaking news, ensuring accuracy, urgency, and balance.
• Identify and plan impactful stories that resonate with the community, utilizing editorial judgment and social listening.
• Craft and refine compelling content for digital platforms, including websites, mobile apps, and streaming services.
• Guide newsroom logistics and provide editorial support for MSJs, producers, and photojournalists.
• Edit reporter content for accuracy, grammar, AP style, digital best practices, fairness, and ethical standards.
• Enrich storytelling with creative elements (graphics, video, audience-submitted content, etc.).
• Leverage available metrics to inform coverage strategies and enhance audience engagement.
• Support newsroom operations and coverage planning as necessary, upholding TEGNA’s journalistic standards and values across all platforms.
