The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a dedicated unit within SIM, is focused on delivering accessible pedestrian curb ramps citywide in compliance with relevant accessibility laws and guidelines. These ramps are vital for ensuring safe and accessible travel throughout New York City, particularly for elderly residents and individuals with disabilities.
PRP invites applications from motivated and detail-oriented professionals to join its dynamic architectural team. This team plays a crucial role in assessing existing pedestrian ramp conditions, reviewing designs of private development projects, monitoring pedestrian ramp installations, ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and coordinating with various entities operating within the Department of Transportation’s right-of-way.
The successful candidate will engage in inter-agency planning initiatives and collaborate closely with other divisions of DOT and City agencies such as the New York City Department of Buildings, Department of Environmental Protection, and Department of Parks and Recreation, ensuring high-quality pedestrian ramp designs throughout the city.
Key responsibilities will encompass:
- Assessing and providing feedback on pedestrian ramp accessibility issues and Builders Pavement Plan drawings to ensure adherence to the latest accessibility and DOT standards.
- Collaborating with internal DOT teams, external agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and the public to ensure the effective implementation of accessibility and DOT requirements.
- Identifying and addressing design challenges, responding to accessibility inquiries, and evaluating technical feasibility.
- Supporting the achievement of PRP’s objectives by enhancing relationships with partner agencies.
- Communicating and enforcing DOT technical standards to relevant external agencies.
Attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and proficiency in reviewing design sketches, plans, and drawings for compliance with applicable standards, codes, laws, rules, and regulations are essential to maintain the highest quality standards.
The selected candidate may also contribute to intra- and interagency efforts aimed at reviewing and updating codes, rules, and guidelines pertaining to pedestrian access in the Public Right of Way.
