The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) plays a vital role in the City's evolving criminal justice system. Engaging in progressive reform initiatives, the DOC is committed to facilitating a transition towards a smaller jail system while ensuring public safety is paramount. Our responsibility extends to maintaining a safe and secure environment for employees, visitors, volunteers, and individuals in our custody. A secure jail system allows us to equip those in custody with the necessary tools and opportunities to reintegrate successfully into their communities. The DOC operates various facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with a dedicated workforce of over 7,500 skilled professionals and experts.
As a Motor Vehicle Operator, successful candidates will be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities encompass:
- Transporting visitors from Brooklyn or Manhattan to jails in Brooklyn or Manhattan (Harlem) for family visits.
- Picking up and distributing food supplies to various jails throughout the NYC area.
- Performing routine checks on the vehicle, including tires, oil, and fuel levels, and ensuring lights, horns, and brakes are functional.
- Reporting any mechanical issues with the vehicle.
- Maintaining cleanliness of the vehicle, inside and out.
- Changing tires and/or wheels on assigned vehicles.
- Loading and unloading items on trucks as needed.
To qualify, candidates must possess a valid motor vehicle driver license in the State of New York at the time of appointment. Candidates with moving violations, license suspensions, or accident records may be disqualified.
