Position Objective:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) plays a crucial role in delivering emergent and urgent care to critically ill patients across various settings including general surgery, surgical subspecialties, cardiology, and medical departments. This position acts as a key liaison among all disciplines and services interfacing with the Critical Care Service. Credentialing will adhere to the regulations set forth by the Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC), with supervision provided by a qualified Critical Care attending physician. The NP/PA reports directly to the Critical Care Medical Director, collaborating to align with evidence-based medical standards, quality initiatives, and the seamless execution of daily ICU processes.

Clinical Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments of critically ill patients in ICU/IMU, ED, recovery room, and on medical/surgical services.
- Deliver urgent and emergent care to patients in critical condition.
- Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations.
- Initiate orders and interpret laboratory and radiological test results.
- Monitor patient status and evaluate responses to treatments.
- Document clinical findings in the ICU medical record.
- Recommend and initiate appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Consult with subspecialty services as needed.
- Provide education and counseling to patients and their families.
- Perform procedures including but not limited to intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, lumbar puncture, chest tube insertion, and paracentesis.
- Engage in daily team rounds, M&M sessions, and departmental conferences/teaching opportunities.
- Foster strong collaboration with nursing and medical staff.
- Participate in continuing education, departmental quality assurance, risk management, and compliance efforts.
- Contribute to critical care research initiatives and renal replacement therapy efforts.
- Facilitate the transfer of critical care patients between facilities.
- Strive to enhance the Critical Care team, referring team, nursing staff, and overall patient and family satisfaction.
- Assess patient and family educational needs and assist in planning and implementing teaching strategies.
- Ensure smooth communication among healthcare professionals to promote effective transitions of care.
- Serve as a role model to nursing staff, demonstrating clinical expertise, critical thinking, and innovation in patient management.
