The Legal Bureau serves as the in-house legal advisor for the NYPD, assisting personnel in interpreting local, state, and federal regulations. The Bureau represents the Department in a range of civil matters, produces records and video evidence for external oversight bodies and litigation, evaluates complex contracts and agreements, and reviews Department policies and procedures for legal compliance.
The Body-Worn Camera Unit within the Legal Bureau assesses legal considerations concerning the release of body-worn camera footage. This unit is responsible for searching, reviewing, and preliminarily investigating footage requests, applying necessary redactions, and ensuring proper footage production in response to requests from government agencies, Freedom of Information Law queries, and both criminal and civil discovery matters.
As a Media Services Technician I within the Body-Worn Camera Unit, your key responsibilities will include:
- Searching NYPD applications to locate relevant footage.
- Tagging responsive footage, creating cases for sharing, and completing necessary documentation.
- Reviewing footage to apply appropriate redactions and edits in accordance with applicable laws and Department policies.
- Downloading and producing copies of footage to comply with requests.
- Facilitating tasks in response to criminal and civil discovery requests from local and federal prosecutors.
