Salary and Benefits Overview
Annual base salary for BPAs will vary depending on grade level, with GL-5/GL-7 salaries ranging from $51,632 to $92,219 per year. Border Patrol Agents can choose from a variety of federal benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a generous annual and sick leave program and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Bonus
Newly appointed BPAs may receive up to $20,000 in incentives, with the first $10,000 awarded upon completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting roles in prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Bonus
In addition, newly appointed BPAs may qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed throughout their first four years of service.
Duty Locations
Important Notice: Duty assignments may include locations along the Southwest Border, including prioritized areas. USBP will determine duty assignments based on operational needs, and relocation may be required. Note that locality pay for federal law enforcement varies by location, with potential eligibility for an additional 25% of base pay for fully trained BPAs under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with opportunities for advancement through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels.
