Salary and Benefits
Starting salaries for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents range from $51,632 to $92,219 annually, depending on grade level (GL-5/GL-7). Our agents enjoy a comprehensive suite of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which is comparable to a traditional ROTH 401(k) plan.
Recruitment Incentive
New agents may qualify for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives, with an initial $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, and an additional $10,000 for accepting positions in prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentive
Newly appointed agents may also be eligible for up to $40,000 in retention incentives, distributed over their first four years.
Duty Locations
Please note that duty assignments will be determined by the U.S. Border Patrol based on operational needs, which may not always align with your preferences. Relocation may be required, and duty locations can include the Southwest Border. Pay rates are impacted by duty location, with locality pay being higher in certain areas. Fully trained Border Patrol Agents may also qualify for up to an additional 25% of base pay according to the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position, with opportunities for advancement through grade levels GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.
