Are you ready to take an integral role in supporting the world's leading laser facility? We are on the lookout for an innovative Associate Section Manager for Operations, Lasers & Alignment Systems Engineering (LASE) to become part of the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. This is a thrilling opportunity to join the team that accomplished fusion ignition in December 2022, marking a groundbreaking achievement in science that has opened new physics realms and set the foundation for future fusion energy advancements.
In this vital role, you will lead a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the operation and maintenance of laser sources, diagnostics, target and beam alignment, and pulsed power systems. You will manage the operational execution, integration, and ongoing improvement of LASE activities across NIF sections, ensuring uninterrupted support for NIF’s shot schedule and mission. This position is part of the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.
This role necessitates full-time, on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading teams, programs, or functions with a technical focus and operating under consultative direction with substantial authority, utilizing subject matter expertise and significant team leadership experience to monitor workflow, allocate resources, ensure timely project completion, and develop strategies to accomplish long-term goals.
- Overseeing the management and execution of the LASE Operations & Integration team, identifying, planning, and executing actions essential for achieving desired outcomes while managing internal sponsors.
- Leading a team of work center supervisors and technicians providing 24/7 operational support for the NIF laser system, including laser sources, diagnostics, target and beam alignment, and pulsed power systems.
- Managing complex operational interfaces with key internal stakeholders responsible for NIF shots, Laser System Operators, and Pulsed Power Operators to ensure the smooth completion of critical tasks supporting NIF’s shot schedule.
- Representing LASE interests in working group interactions with other associate section managers for operations, including participating in the enhancement of Safety, Security, Quality, and Efficiency (SSQE).
- Identifying and coordinating support from work teams and resources necessary for each phase of LASE activities, ensuring clarity and prioritization of LASE scope.
- Serving as the primary contact for LASE Operations, fostering collaboration and communication across the team and stakeholders.
