About the job
The City of New York is looking for a dedicated Assistant Transportation Specialist (ATS) to join the Traffic Control & Engineering team in the Manhattan Borough Engineering unit. This role is pivotal in enhancing the safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility of the city's transportation systems. Working under direct supervision, you will assist in the execution of transportation and traffic studies that support various citywide traffic programs.
As an ATS, you will take part in field investigations and surveys aimed at evaluating current traffic conditions, safety measures, visibility, circulation patterns, crash occurrences, and the dynamics of pedestrian and vehicular operations. Your contributions will include assisting with studies on traffic signal installations, modifications in signal timing, pavement markings, signage, loading zones, and other essential traffic control devices.
Responsibilities also entail reviewing accident reports, observing accident sites, analyzing traffic flow patterns, and evaluating operational changes such as the conversion of two-way streets into one-way operations. You will have the opportunity to propose strategies to improve traffic safety and lessen congestion, including the implementation of temporary detours when necessary.
The ATS will prepare detailed reports, diagrams, and sketches that document field conditions and the findings from studies. This position also supports the preparation of work orders and may involve monitoring the installation, modification, or removal of traffic control devices to ensure they meet established standards and specifications. Additionally, you will collaborate with senior staff in analyzing traffic volume counts and assessing the performance of street and transportation facilities.
Join us in our mission to enhance safety, accessibility, and mobility in New York City. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is dedicated to providing a diverse and inclusive work environment, committed to the recruitment and retention of a workforce that embodies the rich diversity of NYC.
