About the job
The Traffic Control & Engineering division is on the lookout for a dedicated Assistant Transportation Specialist (ATS) to join our Bus Stop Management team. In this role, you will work under direct supervision to assist in the preparation of comprehensive transportation and traffic studies while supporting a variety of citywide traffic initiatives.
Your responsibilities will include conducting field investigations and surveys to assess traffic conditions, safety metrics, visibility, access and circulation patterns, crash occurrences, traffic volumes, as well as pedestrian and vehicular operations. You will also play a key role in projects related to traffic signal installations, timing modifications, pavement markings, signage, loading zones, and other essential traffic control devices.
The ATS will review accident reports, observe accident-prone locations, analyze traffic flow patterns, and support the evaluation of operational changes such as the transformation of two-way streets into one-way streets. You will have the opportunity to recommend strategies aimed at enhancing traffic safety and alleviating congestion, potentially utilizing temporary routing or detours when necessary.
As part of your duties, you will prepare detailed reports, diagrams, and sketches that document field conditions and study findings. This position also involves assisting in the preparation of work orders and monitoring the installation, modification, or removal of traffic control devices to ensure adherence to established standards and specifications.
Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work alongside higher-level staff to analyze traffic volume counts and assess the operational performance of street and transportation facilities. Join us in our mission to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility throughout New York City.
