About the job
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays a vital role in enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all New Yorkers. DEP supplies approximately 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, manages wastewater and stormwater, and actively works to reduce air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, with a dedicated workforce of nearly 6,000 employees, DEP oversees an extensive water supply system comprising 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed that stretches 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages a significant portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected for the next decade. These initiatives enable DEP to maintain and enhance its exemplary water supply system.
The Water System Capital Program (WSCP) is responsible for the planning, design, and construction management that supports the upgrading and maintenance of the Bureau of Water Supply’s essential infrastructure. BEDC delivers a comprehensive capital program to establish new infrastructure and reconstruct existing assets, ensuring the integrity and high quality of the water supply. This extensive work encompasses DEP’s vast network of wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection systems, filtration systems, and related facilities throughout New York City and its watershed.
BEDC is looking to hire an Assistant Mechanical Engineer to serve as an Assistant Project Manager within the WSCP directorate, based at the Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. Under supervision, the chosen candidate will report to an Accountable Manager and assist in overseeing water and wastewater system projects throughout the watershed. These projects may include dams, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, bridges, roadways, and other related infrastructure developments. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing the design and construction of projects within the NYC watershed. The selected candidate will monitor permit requirements, assist in resolving project issues, conduct reliable field condition surveys, and prepare accurate reports based on physical observations. Additionally, the candidate will thoroughly review contract documents, codes, and regulations, comparing them to project requirements to identify any deficiencies. Active participation in field investigations to develop alternative strategies and solutions to meet project objectives is also expected, along with collaboration with the construction management team to conduct inspections of construction activities.
