Anatomical Laboratory Specialist
Position Overview
The Anatomical Laboratory Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s anatomical collections through expert laboratory conservation, preparation, and safety measures. This position is crucial for ensuring the preservation, documentation, and accessibility of wet tissue, histological, and skeletal collections, all in compliance with museum standards and federal health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine conservation, fluid replacement, and container repair for wet tissue collections.
- Prepare new wet tissue, skeletal, and histological specimens according to NMHM protocols.
- Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining, including bone.
- Examine specimens to determine the appropriate preparation and staining techniques.
- Maintain detailed documentation of laboratory and conservation activities in electronic databases and spreadsheets.
- Manage laboratory equipment and supplies; submit purchase and service requests as necessary.
- Assist with regular laboratory safety inspections to ensure compliance with BSL-2, OSHA, and museum safety standards.
- Perform weekly safety inspections of emergency eyewash and shower stations.
- Coordinate the safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of chemical and biohazardous materials.
- Provide laboratory support for exhibits and public programs as required.
- Support other NMHM divisions as needed and attend meetings as directed.
