About the job
Are you a passionate expert in American Sign Language (ASL) ready to influence the advancement of artificial intelligence? As large-scale language models transition from simple chatbots to sophisticated tools for linguistic and cultural comprehension, your contributions will be vital. High-quality training data is essential for creating AI that democratizes education, enhances accessibility for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities, and fosters effective communication for all. Your expertise can help shape the next generation of AI.
We are seeking ASL specialists who embody fluency in American Sign Language, familiarity with Deaf culture, and knowledge of visual linguistics, ASL grammar and syntax, non-manual markers, fingerspelling, and regional dialects. Your role will involve testing advanced language models on tasks such as ASL-to-English translation, classifier usage, receptive and expressive skills, facial expressions in ASL, and spatial grammar—documenting any shortcomings to strengthen model reasoning.
On a typical day, you will engage with the model on real-world ASL communication scenarios and theoretical inquiries in signed language linguistics, ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance, capturing reproducible error traces, and proposing enhancements to our prompt design and evaluation criteria.
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Linguistics, or a related field is preferred; RID certification, teaching experience, or involvement in community interpreting projects are advantageous. Clear, metacognitive communication—essentially “showing your work”—is crucial for this position.
Are you ready to leverage your ASL expertise to build the knowledge foundation for tomorrow’s AI? Apply today and start training the model that will educate the world.
