Role Title: Head of Data Science

Location: UK-based (with support from India-based teams)

Reports to: VP Insights & Decision Science

Team: 6 Data Scientists (split between Decision Science and Personalisation)

Purpose of Role

The Head of Data Science is a pivotal leadership role tasked with constructing and leading a premier "decision engine" team. As a principal architect of our "AI-driven future," you will spearhead the evolution of The Economist’s Data Science division from a service-oriented function to a "trusted adviser" that provides commercially transformative insights and top-tier personalisation capabilities.

Your responsibilities include establishing and elevating the technical and operational standards of the team, while cultivating a culture centered on technical excellence and innovation.

Your role encompasses two vital areas:

  1. Decision Science: Developing the capacity for causal inference and sophisticated forecasting to facilitate high-stakes strategic decisions, such as analyzing subscriber behavior and its impact on retention and value, optimizing marketing and media strategies, understanding content performance drivers, and modeling pricing and customer lifetime value.
  2. Personalisation: Rapidly enhancing our recommendation and pricing engines to boost subscriber acquisition, engagement, retention, and lifetime value metrics.
