About the job

Atomic Semi builds compact semiconductor fabrication tools in Austin, developing both hardware and software in-house. The team works at every level of the process, from atomic-scale details to full system design. With advanced 3D printers, a variety of microscopes, e-beam writers, and custom fabrication equipment, engineers create solutions quickly and adapt as needed. When a resource is missing, the team develops it internally. Atomic Semi was founded by Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller, both bringing significant industry experience.

Role overview

The Hardware Test Engineer works onsite in Austin, collaborating across engineering teams. This role combines hands-on testing with scientific analysis to evaluate tools, identify issues, and troubleshoot complex failures. Projects move quickly, with development and testing cycles measured in days or weeks.

Early success involves creating and executing test plans that lead to better tool designs within the first month. By three months, the expectation is to independently resolve difficult problems, especially those related to positioning tools. After six months, the engineer’s work should contribute to improvements across multiple teams and systems.

Applicants must submit a portfolio of past projects with their application.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead tool characterization: define measurement metrics, run software-driven tests, stress hardware to find limits, and document failures to support engineering decisions.

About Atomic Semi
